Hey friends, and welcome back to styledbymckenz! Please tell me I am not the only one literally in awe that tomorrow will be the first day of April. Seriously, where has the time gone?! However, with the month coming to an end it means it’s time to share with you all what I’ve been loving this month + what’s been going on.

Honestly, this month has been an absolute roller coaster of temperatures and weather. As you can tell some days I was stuck in multiple layers and all the chunky knits and other days I could wear open toed shoes! Although, that’s partially why I had such a hard time choosing my top three favorite outfits this month. (Hence, the reason why I chose five!) I’ve been loving light wash denim, white, and stripes this month… oh and my fake glasses from Amazon.

This month was all about accessorizing as well. I’ve been experimenting with things around my neck a ton whether it be scarves, bandanas, or my new chokers from BellaDesignsByBree. Be sure to follow me on Instagram @styledbymckenz, I am giving away the daisy one today! This month I’ve also been sporting my favorite gold crossboody from Gap and my $6 espadrilles from Forever 21; they are the perfect spring shoe.

IMG_6914.JPGMy makeup favorites this month were by far the Bare Minerals Lipgloss and my Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette. This palette has always been one of my favorites as I find that it is so versatile and I can create endless looks with this palette. Other than this I have honestly been feeling super uninspired with my makeup choices and feel that a trip to Ulta is very much in need for the near future.

As far as my Bible goes, I just finished reading 1 Corinthians and it was absolutely amazing. On top of that I’ve been reading verses here and there from Psalms. After talking with Gb a lot this month, I have realized that Jesus’s love is absolutley unfailing and that he can heal all wounds no matter how big they may be.

I have slowed down a bit on the Netflix and am only at the beginning of Season 3 on Gilmore Girls but am loving it nonetheless. Right now I am seriously in the mood to watch a fashion inspired movie or TV show like the Carrie Diaries so if you have any suggestions please leave them below! And as far as music goes, I’ve honesty been listening to a ton of country with Madison this month. Something about it just screams home to me.

Let’s talk goals; last month I set a goal to reach 2,000 followers on my Instagram and I am super happy to announce that that goal has been met. I hope to reach 2,200 and begin getting my blog subscriptions up and moving again as I reached a bit of a stand still this month.  Hopefully everything goes as planned + I’m working on a super excited project that I cannot wait to share with you.  I also have been a planning freak this month and have been using my Lily agenda nonstop to plan things out for the blog and for school. Something about my organized mess leaves me feeling a little less anxious.

Spring Choker Haul + Outfit Idea (ft. BellaDesignsByBree)

Spring Choker Haul + Outfit Idea ft. BellaDesignsByBree

Chokers were the quintessential accessory of the 90s and as many other pieces from the age, have quickly found their way back onto the runways and into the collections of every major designer. I myself will admit to having jumped on this bandwagon quite some time ago and do not plan on letting up any time soon.

Here’s why:  The kinds of styles are endless; the classic pearl, double wrap, velvet, etc. the list could go on forever and ensures the perfect style for every type of girl. They look good with almost anything. Every season, every outfit… it is almost guaranteed that some type of choker will pair well with your outfit. And lastly, they are inexpensive. Most sell for under $20 leaving the on the less expensive side of my jewelery collection.

Today I am sharing with you a haul of my most recently added chokers that have made their way into my growing collection. All of these chokers can be purchased from the BellaDesignsByBree Etsy shop with 15% off your purchase when using the code ‘mckenz15’.

Daisy Choker (purchase through insta) // Brown Beaded Choker

Here is one of my favorite ways to style a choker- paired with an off the shoulder shirt. This style top naturally draws attention to the neck and with a super cute coordinating necklace you are destined to look put together and trendy all the while. My top is from TJ Maxx, jeans are from the Gap Outlet, and my booties are Lucky Brand.

I am seriously so in love with these necklaces as they have been the perfect addition to my wardrobe this spring. I have received tons of compliments and have had so much fun incorporating Bree’s pieces into my everyday outfits.

Be sure to check out her Etsy shop- BellaDesignsByBree (15% off purchase with code ‘mckenz15’ at checkout) and her Instagram- BellaDesignsByBree

March Empties

Hey everyone, welcome back to styledbymckenz! In January I shared my first ever empties post of all the products I used up throughout the month and my honest opinion/review on all the products. I got such positive feedback and finished so many products this month that I figured, why not do another one?! Alright, before I start to ramble let’s get on into it.

March Empties

I finished up quite the stash of body products as you can tell. This is probably my fourth set of Warm Vanilla Sugar lotion and perfume. It is my absolute favorite scent because it’s not to perfume-y, I will definitely be repurchasing this set again. I use Bath & Body Works body washes all the time, however I wasn’t in love with this scent ( A Thousnad Wishes) so I probably will not repurchase this one again. I also finished the 3 Minute Miracle hair mask from Aussie. This was my fifth time finishing a bottle and I will most definitely repurchase this again. It is such a life saver for dry, brittle hair!

March Empties

I also finished quite a few makeup products this month. First, is the only brush cleaner I have ever used. I find that it works well but nothing about it screams ‘amazing’ to me. I also finished the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara which is my favorite affordable mascara because it lengthens and volumizes at the same time, plus at $5 it cannot be beat. I also finished the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer and have already repurchased it. It is the best drugstore concealer because it covers literally everything. Lip products are something I absolutely never finish but this month I finished two; a Stila Lipgloss that is super sticky but was the prettiest color and a Buxom lipstick. I received this as a sample on Black Friday two years ago and used it at least once a week from then on. It is the perfect color and I will be repurchasing this in the full size as soon as possible. I also used the Elf Natural Lash Kit at formal last weekend. I love their lashes but the glue is awfu. I would highly suggest getting a different lash glue when using their lashes.

Full Face of Drugstore Makeup Tutorial

Do you ever feel like your wallet is crying after browsing what’s new in makeup on Sephora’s website for the fourth time in a week?! I seriously cannot be the only one; but  don’t worry y’all, the drugstore is full of amazing items for prices that certainly will not break the bank. Head on over to your local drugstore and start picking out a few goodies, I promise some of the things you find will be just as good as from Sephora.

To begin the look, I am as always starting with a fresh, moisturized face. I am then priming my face with the Nivea Men’s Shave Balm Primer ($6.49) to ensure that my face makeup stays in place all day.

I am then buffing the Garnier BB Cream ($9.49) in the shade ‘light medium’ into my skin with a damp beauty blender. This BB Cream acts as a tinted moisturizer and provides a light-medium coverage throughout the day. To then provide a bit more coverage, I am taking the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer ($6.99) to conceal my under-eyes and any blemishes. To keep my face from getting oily throughout the day I am setting it with the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder ($4.99).

I am then taking the Physicians Formula Bronze Booster ($7.89) and defining my cheekbones, nose, and temples. After, I am taking the peach shade from the Elf Blush Quad ($5.99) and applying this to the apples of my cheeks. To highlight the bridge of my nose, cupid’s bow, brow bone, and tips of my cheekbones I am using a champagne single shadow called ‘French Vanilla’ from Covergirl ($2.97).

To prep my lids for eyeshadow I am taking the Maybelline Color Tattoo ($6.99) in the shade ‘Barely Branded’ and applying it all over my lids with my fingers. For the eyeshadow look I am using the Wet N Wild ‘Comfort Zone’ palette ($5.00) . It is by far my favorite eyeshadow palette from the drugstore and is full of super pigmented shadows. I am first taking the warm champagne shade on the left and packing this onto my lids using a flat shader brush.

I decided to go for a green look today, as I have never tried a look like this and I ended up loving it. So for the crease shade, I am taking the light green shadow on the right and applying this directly into my crease.

For my outer v I am taking the darker green shadow on the right side of the palette. This color perfectly defined my eyes and made them pop big time.

To fill and shape my brows I am using the NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder ($5.99) on an angled brush. I am then going in with the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil ($4.49) in the shade ‘Milk’ to perfectly carve out my brows and define my brow bone.

I am then curling my lashes and applying several coats of the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara ($5.99)to my upper and lower lashes to lengthen and volumize my lashes. For the lips I am applying the NYX Lingerie Lipstick ($6.99) in the shade ‘Corset’.

Well that is it for this drugstore makeup tutorial. What do you all think of the pop of color added to this look?! I personally loved it and felt that it made my eyes pop big time! Let me know what you think of the look in the comments below along with any other questions, comments, or requests you may have for me. Wishing you the happiest Friday! With love, McKenz.

Brief story on how StyledbyMcKenz came to be- I have told the story of why/how I started my blog time and time again but here it goes once more: Over a year ago I sat down in my mom’s office looking for a way to combine my love for photography, clothing, makeup, and writing. She told me to start a blog. The idea made me nervous but I told her that if we could think of a name I would be willing to start one. A few weeks later my website was designed, a name was picked, and my first blog post ever was published. Just like that my life was flipped upside down and I could not be more grateful for this blog and all the people I have met along the way!

Two Pieces Of Advice- There are two things in specific that I wish someone had told me before starting a blog and making it more than a way to spend my free time. The first being, you are half the recipe to your success. If you want to reach your goals, go out and work towards them. Half of your success depends upon yourself, your passion, and your content. The other half is up to the people who read your blog and are the numbers behind it, which brings me to my next piece of advice. Stop worrying about the number. If your blog is not ‘growing’ the way you want it or you feel like there are so many people doing better than you, take the time to really look at your following. I currently stand at 1,200 WordPress followers and compared to others that number is so minuscule and to others that is so huge. Think of your following as the actual people and faces they are, not the number they make up. You’d be surprised how differently you view your following from then on.

Favorite blog memory- I feel as though I haven’t done anything super out of the ordinary in terms of blogging but nonetheless my favorite blogging memory has to be getting dressed up in my ribbon skirt and lace up heels before stopping on the side of the road with snow on the ground to take my one year anniversary pictures. I had so much joy and pride filled inside, like everything I had worked so hard for had paid off in one way or another.

Two favorite posts and why- Inevitably ‘StyledbyMcKenz Turns One‘ is my all time favorite blog post for reasons stated earlier and in close second would have to be ‘The Power of Makeup‘. I received such positive feedback from this post and felt so comfortable in my own skin, so proud of what I wrote and the message I was sending to other girls of all ages and ethnicities.

Below are nine girls I tag to answer any of the tags mentioned today (Versatile Blogger Award, Liebster Award, Mystery Blogger Award)-

  1. mergingthreads
  2. trip by triplets
  3. marioness
  4. fadedrouge
  5. kaylee marie
  6. beautybyadutchgirl
  7. whowhatfab
  8. amyhedgecook
  9. apocketfulofprep

Alright friends, that’s a wrap for today’s blog post. I hope you all enjoyed and hopefully learned a bit more about me. Be sure to leave me requests for upcoming blog posts you would like to see along with any other comments or questions you may have for me. Sending you all my love. With love, McKenz.

GRWM Formal- Hair, Makeup, and Outfit

Hi, friends and welcome back to styledbymckenz! As I mentioned in my latest Weekly Wrap Up, this past Saturday was my school’s spring formal. I had such a good time with all of my friends and it felt so good to get all prettied up for a night. At my school, formal is a pretty casual dance in the sense that not too many people go, the girls don’t go out and buy super fancy dresses, and typically nobody goes with a date. Nonetheless we always have a good time. I posted a get ready with me from this dance last year and felt that it was only fitting for me to post one this year as well. Keep reading to see how I did my hair, makeup, and what I wore for the night.

Makeup- I typically like to do my makeup first when getting ready for a dance so that I don’t mess up my hair or anything of that sort. I honestly attempted to take pictures for this post- tutorial style but it was far too much and the steps to this makeup look seemed endless so I decided to just write it out for you all instead.

As far as what I was aiming for when doing my makeup look I pretty much had no idea what I wanted to do with my makeup other than I knew I wanted to wear falsies and a super glossy lip. Here’s what I came up with and how I achieved this look:

IMG_6617
GRWM Formal
Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset
GRWM Formal
  • To begin the look I started by priming not only my face with the Nivea Men’s Shave Balm but my lids with the Urban Decay Primer Potion as well. It’s super important to prime if you know you’re going to be moving around a lot and/or sweating a lot.
  • Next, I took the Maybelline Matte Fit Me Foundation in the shade ‘220’ on a damp beauty blender and buffed this into my skin to bring an evenness to my face and match my face to my neck.
  • I then went in with the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder and set my face to ensure that I did not get oily as the night went on.
  • I then concealed my underlies with the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer and set that with the shade ‘Banana’ from the Anastasia Contour Kit.
  • Next, I began to skip around a bit by moving to my eyes. I applied the Maybelline Color Tattoo in the shade ‘Barely Branded’ to my lids to act as a base for my shadows.
  • I decided to go for a soft pink eye look that would match my dress. I began by taking the shade ‘Champagne’ and ‘Light Pink’ from the Lorac Pro palette and packed this onto my lids with a flat shader brush. For the crease I took the matte shade called ‘mauve’ on a crease brush and blended this out. For my outer -v and my lower lash line I took the shade ‘BFF’ from the Tartest palette.
  • I then filled in and shaped my brows using the Anastasia Dip Brow in the lightest shade ‘Blonde‘. (note: the lightest shade is still rather dark if you ask me)
  • To carve out my brows I used the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in the shade ‘Milk’. This step will leave your shadows and brows looking super crisp and clean.
  • I then applied the Elf Natural Lash falsies and blended my real lashes to my fake lashes with the Maybelline Chaotiques Mascara. For my lower lashes I used the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara.
  • Moving back to my face I contoured my temples, nose, and cheek bones with the Lumene Bronzer. I chose to use a bronzer to keep it from looking too harsh.
  • I then highlighted the bridge of my nose, brow bone, inner corner, cupids bow, and high points of my cheeks with the shade ‘Champagne Truffle’ from the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette. I also applied a bit of blush to keep my face from looking flat.
  • For the lips I used the Buxom Full On Lip Cream in the shade ‘White Russian’. I loved how plump and full this made my thin lips look.
  • To finish off the look I used the Urban Decay All Nighter Spray to keep my face looking dewy and prevent my makeup from completely sliding off my face by the end of the night.

Hair- I decided that I wanted my hair to look super big and full for the night so inevitably that left me the option to curl my hair.

I used my USmooth Wave Iron and the Got2BGlued Blasting Freeze Spray to create this Carrie Bradshaw inspired hair look. I loved the way it looked with my velvet dress and choker- all the 90’s vibes baby!

Outfit- Like I mentioned earlier, this dance is pretty casual in terms of what we wear. My mom picked up this pink velvet shift dress from Nordstrom Rack on clearance. I wore some Steve Madden heels that I previously wore to a dance and a black choker that I already had. I chose not to wear any other jewelry because honestly I just find it annoying while I’m dancing. And my nails and toes are both painted the color ‘Ruby Do’ from Sally Hansen.

Below are a few pictures of me and my gals before the dance.

Well that’s a wrap for today’s Get Ready With Me! What did you all think?! Let me know in the comments below along with any other questions, comments, or requests you may have for me. Thank you all so much for stopping by; I hope you enjoyed. Sending you all my love. With love, McKenz.

Pre-Spring Fashion: Outfits + Trends

One of the most exciting parts of Spring is seeing all the styles from February’s  Fashion Week slowly making their way into wearable, everyday clothing. Walking into your favorite clothing store and seeing all the light colors, floral prints, and open toed shoes is the best feeling after being stuck in clunky winter wear for the last few months.

The first trend spotted all over during New York Fashion Week that has slowly found its way into stores is denim as always, and in many new forms. Seen as chokers, raw hems, skirts, two toned jeans, and jackets I am certain that denim will be all the rage for yet another season in a row.  In addition, you can’t forget to pull out the white jeans; they are the best for this time of year. Spotted on the streets lately have been neck scarves. They seem like an inevitable wardrobe option as we slowly transition into warmer weather these next few weeks. Plus with the endless color options and pattens everyone is sure to find one they love. Velvet was everyone’s one true love this past season and seems to be here to stay for spring, especially in the color blush! It is the trendiest color for the upcoming season. Along with funky sleeves and cutouts, pleets were spotted on everything from dresses to tanks. Lastly, the footwear. I have been seeing lace ups everywhere along with sneakers in every color and in the most creative styles! I am almost certain that Target’s spring shoes line will be steeling my money this season.

Here’s my take on these pre-spring trends-

Well what did you all think of these outfits?! Spring officially starts in three days, woohoo; I am so sick of winter! Unfortunately, us East coast peeps have been stuck with the most miserable weather the last week with freezing cold temps and alllll the snow so these outfit’s aren’t exactly as ideal for me as they would’ve been in the sixty-five degree weather we were having two weeks ago. However, I have come to the conclusion that it’s time to start putting together some ideas for the warmer temps (hopefully) headed our ways, which is what lead me to today’s post.

These are my absolute favorite posts to write so I really hope you all enjoyed! Let me know what trends you’ve been eyeing lately along with any other questions, comments, or requests you may have for me. Wishing lots of warm weather upon you all. With love, McKenz

Spring Cleaning

Typically when I think of spring I think of a general cleanliness, a fresh start. It feels almost wrong to me to enter the new season without deep cleaning my room. I know for many people spring cleaning may seem tedious but it doesn’t have to be! Crank some tunes, get some room decor inspiration from Pinterest, and get out the garbage bags because it’s time to get cleaning.

Spring Cleaning

Start off by stripping your bed. Wash your sheets and put on a fresh set and then make your bed. I cannot tell you how much cleaner your room will look once you simply make your bed! It’s not that hard and it will instantly make your day feel more productive.

Honesty, the only thing that makes my room seem messy is if there are clothes lying around or my closet is overflowing. If you’re looking to really analyze your wardrobe and full clean it out I recommend dumping its entire contents on the floor. This way you have no choice but to sort through it all. I do this with both my closet AND dresser.

Make three piles: Keep, Donate, and Trash. Go through every. single. piece. Until there is nothing left. If you haven’t worn it in the last six months, chances are it would be better off in the arms of a new owner. If you really want to keep it, put it on a different colored hanger so you are reminded to wear that piece before anything else. If it’s damaged to the point where it can’t be fixed or is just flat-out grubby, throw it in the trash pile.

Organize your shoes however you desire but get them in order, untie the laces if you were too lazy to take them off the right way the last time you wore them and put each shoe with its rightful other.

I tend to throw all of my socks in a bin to keep them in one designated spot and hang my scarves on a holder to keep the massive mound of scarves off of my closet floor. By hanging things like my shoes and scarves on the dooor I can maxamize the space of my closet. Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

If you have a desk or bookshelf, rearrange it! It can open up the space of your room or in some cases, any change of scenery is good for the mind.  I decorate my shelves with hats, old magazines, sunglasses, shoes, anything that screams me. I like to switch them up as the seasons change so I don’t get bored with them.

My room is by no means the biggest which is why I always clean it from season to season. My closet is tiny but I keep it packed and organized that way I am constantly sifting through different clothes and can turly see what I have to wear. If you find yourself staring at your closet each morning thinking ‘omg I have nothing to wear’ chances are you just need to reorganize it and see whats inside.

If you have any tips for spring cleaning or how to keep a tiny room tidy be sure to leave a comment below along with any other questions, comments, or requests you may have for me. I am always happy to chat. Wishing you all the best day. With love, McKenz.
