Finding Yourself

Faith Update: Psalms

Hi guys, it’s been a few weeks since my last faith journey post so I figured I would do a little update and share with you some recent passages that have really spoken to me and a few pages from my bible that I made super cute with just a pen and colored pencils! Yesterday was Ash Wednesday which marked the first day of Lent. I’m making sure to spend a minimum of twenty minutes with my Bible and talking with Jesus everyday. I hope some of you can relate to my thoughts below, thank you for reading! With love, McKenz.

Psalm 32:15 “But I trust in you Lord.” I found that I love this passage most because it’s sole focus is on putting our trust in God and allowing Him to take the lead despite the confusion and uncertainty we might have. We must allow faith to lead our way and be convinced that it will lead us to better things.

Psalms 32:10 “Love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.” This is by far my favorite Psalms passage that I have read so far. Something is so comforting about knowing that God’s love is always within us if we trust in him. Like I said, passages that have to do with tryst seem to be the ones I’m always highlighting and underlining.IMG_7687.JPG

Psalm 26:1 “In the Lord I have trusted.” We are always in Gods hands and he is leading us to bigger and better things and it is better to walk in blind with Jesus and than walk in sighted without Jesus by our side.IMG_7686.JPGPsalms 30:2 “You raised me up.” God has sent obstacles in our path but he has always done these things to benefit us in the long run.

Beauty Basics: The Purpose of Makeup and the Different Kinds

Hi guys, today I am here to bring you the second edition of Beauty Basics! If you missed the first one on learning about your face and makeup terminology than click here. Today I am going to be teaching you the purpose of makeup and all the different kinds. I hope you all are enjoying this series and are learning something from it. Thank you so much for reading, wishing you nothing but happiness this week. With love, McKenz.

Foundation: Foundation comes in all different shades and formulas. It’s purpose is to add a somewhat heavy coverage that will cover all discoloration and blemishes.

Tinted Moisturizer or BB Cream: Tinted moisturizer and BB Cream are essentially the same thing. The purpose is to provide a light weight coverage to even out one’s skin tone. Although, it is not promised to cover any blemishes, just provide an even base.

Concealer: Concealer comes in many different forms, some is meant to cover under eye circles and others are solely meant to cover up blemishes and imperfections.

Face Primer: Face primer ensures that your makeup lasts as long as possible and allows your face makeup to live up to its full potential.

Bronzer: Bronzer is usually bought two shades darker than your skin tone and is used to warm up your complexion and leave you looking sun kissed.

Contour Powder: Contouring is the hottest new makeup trend that is supposed to make your face appear thinner and cheekbones more defined.

Powder: Powder sets your concealer and/or foundation so that it stays in place throughout the day.

Highlighter: Highlighter is used on the high points of your face so you’re left glowing when the sun hits.

Blush: Blush is an easy way to bring life back into your face, it comes in color ranges from peach to plum. Blush comes in cream, powder, mate, and sparkly. If you want the sun to reflect your cheeks when they hit the light, then reach for a sparkly one.

Foundation vs. Tinted Moisturizer: Foundation provides a heavy coverage that covers blemishes and redness and is guaranteed to last a long time and a tinted moisturizer provides a light coverage that evens out one’s complexion.

Under eye concealer vs. blemish concealer: This is pretty self exploratory. Under eye concealer cancels out the veins and redness under your eyes and blemish/stick concealer covers up blemishes and imperfections for a heavier coverage.

Loose powder vs. pressed powder: Loose powder is generally put into a container with holes in it; it’s very airy and isn’t easy to pack into your face. This one is translucent which means it can be used on all skin tones and provides no pigmentation. It is just provides a matte finish and removes any shine. On the other hand, pressed powder is easily packed into your face for a full coverage.

Powder blush vs. cream blush: Powder blush is usually used for a lightweight look, cream blush is generally heavier and should be used if you have a lot of matte products on your face to add some different textures and ensure you don’t look like a cake face.

Contour vs. bronzer: Contour is used to define cheekbones and make your face appear thinner. Bronzer makes you look like you have a light glow and can be applied nearly everywhere like a powder to warm up your complexion.

Matte Finish vs. Dewy Finish: Matte products leave you looking completely unshiny where as a dewy finish will leave you looking slightly damp and with a healthy, “I was just outside during summer” look.

Eye Primer: Eye primer allows your eye shadow to live up to it’s full pigmentation and lasting abilities.

Base: A base is usually put on after primer and has a tacky like formula that allows your eye shadow to stay even longer. I also find that adding a base makes my eye shadow really pop and look extremely pigmented.

Eye shadow: Almost everybody knows what eye shadow is. It’s color that you put onto your eyelids and probably used in the color blue when you were six years old. Eye shadow is my favorite makeup product of all time. There are endless combinations and colors which is what I love most.

Mascara: Mascara does three different things. It can volumize, lengthen, or separate your lashes. A mascara that does all three is what you should be looking for. Mascara is different for everyone, so if you find one that works for you, hold onto it.

Eyeliner: Eyeliner can darken up a look and easily thickens the lash line and/or lash band.

Eyebrow pencil: Eyebrow pencils are just like pencil eyeliners. You can easily fill in the sparse areas of your eyebrows and a pencil is the easiest and most efficient way to over draw your eyebrows if you are trying to reshape them.

Eyebrow gel and powder: Eyebrow gel keeps your eyebrows in place the whole day and eyebrow powder keeps your brows lightly filled in.

Stick base vs. cream base: Cream bases are very thick and tacky. This is what I use every day to keep my shadows lasting long. Stick bases are a lot more blendable but are less pigmented. I love these most for costume makeup tutorials.

Liquid Eyeliner vs. Pencil eyeliner: Liquid eyeliner is best if you’re trying to achieve a wing and is used on the upper lash line. Pencil eye liner is super creamy and is worn on the tight line and the water line. I don’t recommend this on your top line unless you’re going for a sloppy more smoked out look.

Brow gel and powder vs. brow pencil: Brow gel and powder keep your eyebrows in place all day and lightly filled in. Brow pencils are the easiest way to draw on your eyebrows and re-shape them. I usually use this for a more dramatic makeup look.

Mascara: Separating vs. volumizing vs. lengthening: All mascaras do different things. I recommend a volumizing mascara for a dramatic look, lengthening to darken up the look and bring as much attention to the eyes as possible, and a separating mascara for a natural look.

Matte eye shadow vs. sparkly eye shadow: Matte eye shadows have a flat finish and create a neutral look where as sparkly eye shadows create lots of definition and guarantee for attention to be brought to your eyes first.

Lip exfoliate: Lip exfoliate gets rid of all the dead skin cells and leaves your lips feeling soft and rejuvenated. My favorite is the mint one from Lush.

Lip balm: Lip balm simply moisturizes your lips and heals them.

Lipstick: Lipstick has lasting color with a thick formula. My favorite brands are Essence and Maybelline. I love wearing a nude lipstick with a gloss for an easy wearable look for school.

Lip stain: Lip stains are lipsticks that stain your lips for hours and won’t come off when eating or drinking.

Lip gloss: I have an obsession with lip gloss. I love the heavy coating it leaves on my lips and the shiny look it provides rather than a matte.

Lip liner: Lip liner prevents your lipstick from bleeding onto your skin throughout the day.

Lipstick vs. Lip pencil: Lipstick comes in stick form where as lip pencils are in pencil form and are easier to apply and have a much longer wearing time.

Matte Finish vs. Satin Finish: Matte finishing lip products have a flat look to them without any shine and satin finishing products are glossy, often sparkly, and allow your lips to appear plumper and more full.

6 Ways To Style Booties

The amount of shoes I have is rather uncalled for (oopsie..) but it comes in handy when I want to write a blog post! Today I am going to be showing you ladies six different ways to wear your booties. I have included one pair of rain booties, two pairs of heeled booties, and three pairs of booties with less than a half inch heel. I thought the variety of styles would be perfect because I am fully aware that there are several different styles and you all are obviously not guaranteed to have the same styles as myself. I really hope you guys enjoy this styling post, they are my favorite, so if you have any other clothing pieces you think I should style please let me know because I would love to do that for you! If you didn’t see yesterdays post click here. Hope you’re having a fabulous day, with love, McKenz.

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

This outfit is one of my favorites, it’s easy to wear and a quick outfit with only four items in total. I think it’s super comfortable but still looks put together with socks that match the turtle neck perfectly.

Outfit Details: booties- Steve Madden, sweater- Old Navy, jeans- Hollister, socks- Columbia, watch- Kate Spade

For a rainy day that consists of damp streets I like to wear shoes that are practical for the weather. For a little bit of rain I would much rather wear my booties instead of rain boots because they weigh a lot less and are less bulky. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Hunters, but I prefer to wear those in the snow. I’m paring this with a sweater and a matching scarf to stay warm.

Outfit Details: booties- Michael Kors, sweater- Old Navy, scarf- Gap, jeans- Hollister, watch- Macys, boot toppers- Francescas, bracelets- Alex and Ani

For some of my viewers that work in a more professional setting, this one’s for you: I think that pairing a cardigan with a tank top is a timeless outfit. Pair this with a few dainty necklaces, a statement necklace, or even a scarf to spice this look up a bit and the matching socks balance this look out perfectly.

Outfit Details: booties- TJ Maxx, cardigan- Gap, tank top- Old Navy, jeans- Hollister socks- Aeropostale, watch- Macys

I wore this outfit to a cheer event one time and got tons of compliments. I also wore this dress to homecoming with heels and then was able to transition it to something much more casual and appropriate for the occasion by adding my army jacket to play with some textures and adding some fun heeled booties with a cool cut out on the side. Don’t be afraid to branch out a bit, that’s what fashion is all about.

Outfit Details: booties- Nine West, dress- TJ Maxx, jacket- TJ Maxx, watch- Kate Spade, bracelets- Alex and Ani

I love my maroon booties because they add a pop of color to my mostly earth toned wardrobe. My mom happened to give me this cowell neck sweater after it shrunk in the watch and it matched perfectly! I love these boots with an all black look or even a white top, jeans, and matching statement necklace or scarf.

Outfit Details: booties- Old Navy, jeans: Hollister, sweater: Tahari, watch: Kate Spade, bracelets: Alex and Ani and Charming Charlies

This is probably my most worn outfit with booties. I have a love for scarves and crew neck sweaters paired with matching socks and because I have an endless supply of all three, this outfit style is always on repeat.

Outfit Details: booties- Sam Edelman, sweater- Old Navy, scarf- Steve Madden, socks- Kohls, watch- Kate Spade

Beauty Basics: Learning Your Face and Makeup Terms

I’ve mentioned in a previous post that I received my first mascara in sixth grade. From then on my love for makeup took off. Between myself and some makeup gurus on YouTue I learned everything I needed to know about makeup. Although, I also learned that like everything, practice makes perfect. I get asked quite often about my makeup. Some have been applying makeup to their face for years but always stuck to the basics and some couldn’t say the difference between a concealer and a foundation. Today I am starting a new series called “Beauty Basics” to provide you with the knowledge I wish I was once given. Today, the first post of “Beauty Basics”, I am going to be teaching you all about your face. I know everybody here has the common sense to identify their face’s physical features but in the world of makeup an eye is much more than an eye. I will be posting makeup tutorials on the blog in the near future and I want all my viewers to be able to follow along with the terminology I’m using. So without further ado, let’s get started.

I’m going to start with the eyes because they are the most defined and intricate part of our faces. With this being said if you don’t know anything about makeup than you are in for a treat and lots of learning.

#1: The eyebrow- Everybody knows what their eyebrows are and if yours are anything like mine you might find their over all appearance to look better if you fill them in with an eye shadow similar to their natural color (I use “Faint” from Urban Decay). Eyebrows make or break a makeup look so you should take this into consideration next time you find yourself looking in the mirror while doing your makeup.IMG_7831

#2: The Brow bone- The brow bone is exactly as it sounds, the part of your face right beneath your eyebrow that is often times highlighted with a light eye shadow to show a distinct difference between your eye shadow itself and the eyebrow.IMG_7834

#3: The inner corner- Some peoples eyes get irritated very easily by adding shadow into their inner corner but if yours doesn’t than adding a light eye shadow is an easy way to extenuate your eye and make it pop.IMG_7832

#4: The Lid- Everybody knows what their eye lid is but sometimes specific shadows only get used on the inner third or the outer third so be aware that your eye lid can easily be split into more than one part.IMG_7835.JPG

#5: The Outer V- By putting a dark shadow in your outer V you can easily add lots of definition to your look. If you can’t find where yours is, go to the outer third of your crease and wipe your brush horizontally in a V shape.IMG_7837.JPG

#6: The Crease- Your crease is another super self explanatory one, it’s simply the fold in you eye. It’s important to always apply a matte shadow in your crease to act as a transition shade before drifting into sparkly shadows in the crease and outer V. Stay away from  dragging crease colors into your inner third. Some people have a greater distance from their lash line to their eyebrow, like me, and have lots of room to apply eye shadow, if not don’t worry it just means that your crease isn’t as defined! And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.IMG_7836.JPG

#7: The lower lash line- Your lower lash line is simply the skin under your bottom lashes, dragging a dark shadow under this area will create the allusion of a darker look. Don’t get this confused with your water line which is where you would apply eyeliner near your lower lash line. (Water lines can be found if you pull your under eye down a little and find the line right above where your lower lashes grow.)IMG_7833.JPG

That is all for the eye portion if you have any other specific questions, leave them below and I will be happy to answer them, now onto the face.

#1: The cheekbones- Your cheek bones or hollows of your cheeks can be found simply by making a fishy face. Certain makeup such as bronzer or contouring powder is applied here to make your face appear thinner and more defined than they are naturally.IMG_7840.JPG

#2: The apples of your cheeks- If you smile and notice the round part of your cheek that appears rather chubby compared to the rest of your face than you have found the apples of your cheeks, this is the correct spot to apply blush. ( no picture for this one, sorry guys!!)

#3: High points of your face- The high points of your face are right above your cheekbones and can generally be highlighted with a specific powder to make them stand out when the lights hit them.IMG_7841.JPG

#4: Cupids Bow- Your cupids bow is the little heart shape that is formed right above your lip, this is another area that can be highlighted with powder to make your lips appear plumper and fuller.IMG_7838.JPG

#5: Your Nose- Obviously everyone knows what their nose is but the sides of your nose can often be contoured just like your cheekbones in order to appear thinner. So don”t worry there are several ways to make your nose look thinner if you’re not happy with your nose size. Sometimes makeup is all it takes. (-:IMG_7844.JPG

That is it for my first post in “Beauty Basics.” I hope you guys enjoy this new series and if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please leave them below, I love hearing your feedback. Thank you so much for reading I hope you have an amazing Monday. Don’t forget to talk to Jesus, with love, McKenz.

Lorac Pro Palette Review

Happy Saturday friends, I hope you’ve had a wonderful week. I just got home from cheering our schools bocce team at their county competition and I’m now sitting watching Gossip Girl (what a surprise). I’ve been debating on what to blog about today but I finally settled on a review of my Lorac Pro Palette. If I’m being honest, this is one of the palettes I reach for least but it happens to be one of the best palettes I own, all around.

Unfortunately, this palette can not be purchased at Sephora but can be found at your local Ulta or on Lorac’s website for $42.00 which is on the cheaper side for high end eye shadow palettes. This palette has eight matte shadows and eight sparkly and is the most versatile palette I own. It has a matte black finish with silver metallic writing that gets very dirty from fingerprints and foundation smudges but looks expensive nonetheless. It’s also travel friendly and is thinner than a quarter inch.

This palette is packed full of intensely pigmented shadows with a super creamy formula. I find that the eight matte shadows are a lot softer than the sparkly ones. I also find that these shadows seem to apply slightly better with the fingers than a brush. I feel that there is no near as much fall out and this allows the colors to live up to their full pigmentation. As you can see from the picture above, my most loved matte shadow is taupe and as far as sparkly goes, light bronze is my favorite.

The top row of the palette is all matte. Colors swatched from top to bottom are as listed: black, expresso, sable, mauve, light pink, taupe, cream, and white.IMG_7652.JPG

The bottom row are sparkly shadows. Shadows swatched from top to bottom are as listed: slate, deep purple, garnet, pewter, light bronze, gold, champagne, and nude.IMG_7653.JPG

Although I feel that I don’t reach for this palette too much because it lacks a light brown sparkly shadow, I do love the various looks I can create with it. I do recommend this and definetly find that the price is worth it, too. Overall- Wear Time: 8 Pigmentation: 10 Formula: 10 Fallout: 7 Overall: 9.

I hope you guys enjoyed today’s post, don’t forget to check out all my recent blog posts and stay tuned for tomorrows Weekly Wrap Up. Thank you so much for all the support, subscribe and follow me on Instagram @StyledByMcKenz. Wishing you the happiest of days ahead. With love, McKenz.

My Top 5 Favorite Drugstore Products (under $10)

This week seems to be never ending but I hope you all have had a wonderful Thursday. I’m in a super awesome mood right now, I just ate a bunch of Oreo’s, took a long, hot shower, and am snuggling under a blanket watching Gossip Girl. I get questions and comments about my makeup all the time and if I’m being honest a good amount of my makeup can break the bank. So today I’ve rounded out my top five favorite products from the drugstore… and the best part, they’re all under ten dollars!! I hope you guys enjoy and are feeling as happy as I am today. Wishing you the best. With love, McKenz.

#1: Rimmel Stay Matte Powder- I’ve used this powder for almost three years now and I’ve loved it since the day I started using it. I find that this product keeps my face makeup completely matte throughout the entire duration of the day and at the same time provides great pigmentation and a smooth finish. You can purchase it at all drugstores and Ulta for only $4.99. I use this product everyday and it lasts me about six months for one pan.

Wear Time: 8.5 Pigmentation: 8.5 Overall: 9 Shade: 004 Sandstorm

#2: Maybelline Color Whisper- This is probably the sheerest lipstick I own but it’s honesty in my top three favorite lipsticks. Although on my hand it appears that this product has no color pay off at all, my lips are much paler, obviously, so it looks like a light nude that has more brown undertones rather than peach when on the lips. Another reason I adore this lipstick is because you don’t need a mirror to apply and it looks lightweight like a balm. They are $7.49 and can be purchased at all drugstores and Ulta.

Wear Time: 7 Pigmentation: 7.5 Overall: 8 Shade: 15 Some Like It Taupe

#3: Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer- I have the worst under eye circles in the history of under eye circles and unfortunately they are super hard to cover. This concealer has a sponge applicator and masks the blue under eyes that appear due to my vainy under eyes. I like to set this with the banana powder from my Anastasia Contour Kit to ensure that it looks like I got more than seven hours of sleep. This concealer is $7.99 from all drugstores and Ulta.

Wear Time: 8.5 Pigmentation: 8 Overall: 9 Shade: Light Medium

#4: Covergirl Bombshell Curvaceous Mascara- The Covergirl clump crusher has always been one of my favorite mascara for the fact that it has amazing separation. As much as this mascara isn’t the best for volumizing (that’s why I layer this with the Too Faced Better Than Sex) I find that I love this for a super natural and clean look. This product is $7.99 and can be purchased from all drugstores and Ulta.

Wear Time: 9 Pigmentation: 8 Overall: 9 Shade: Black

#5: Maybelline 24 Hour Color Tattoo- I figured I would save my absolute favorite drugstore product for last. If you’re familiar with MAC’s paint pots, this is basically the same thing but costs a fourth of the price. I use this everyday after my primer and before my eye shadow. I use this as a base to ensure my eye shadow lives up to its full potential but I find that these work great without a primer or even eye shadow on top of it. It’s so versatile and lasts for hours and I love the warm champagne shade for everyday. And the best part is, it’s only $6.99 and can be purchased at all drugstores and Ulta.

Wear Time: 10 Pigmentation: 1o Overall: 10 Shade: 77 Barely Branded

I hope you all enjoyed my review on my top favorite drugstore products. The best part about these is that they are all under ten dollars and you can easily apply coupons to make them even more affordable. Don’t forget to Check out all my other posts and look forward to more budget friendly makeup posts in the near future!

5 Ways To Style a Denim Jacket

Hey friends, I hope you all are having a wonderful Wednesday. Today I am here to tell you all about one of my favorite clothing pieces, a denim jacket. I used to hate the look of denim on denim but the more I tried it, the more I learned to like it. There are endless ways to pair a denim jacket and today I’m showing you my top five favorite looks that include my denim jacket which I got on super sale from Kohls for less than twenty dollars!! Crazy, I know!

Idea #1: With a swetaer and flannel- This is one of my favorite outfits for when I’m in need of lots of layers. I find that layering a sweater and a flannel allows you to look sophisticated and stay completely warm.Feel free to add socks for an extra layer or ditch the sweater if you’re in need of something cooler.

Outfit Details- jacket: Kohls, sweater: Old Navy, flannel: Old Navy, necklace: Charming Charlies, jeans: Hollister, riding boots: Target, watch: Kate Spade

Idea #2: With leggings in the rain- I love this outfit for when the rain is pouring down and I can’t seem to bring myself out of bed five minutes earlier to put on jeans. This outfit is comfy and looks like you put in tons of effort.

Outfit Details- jacket: Kohls, shirt: Tahari, scarf: Old Navy, leggings: Victorias Secret Pink, watch: Kate Spade , bracelets: Alex and Ani, necklace: Forever 21

Idea #3: With flowy pants- It took me a while to get on the palazzo pant trend but when I finally did I realized that it was one of the best fashion decisions I ever made. This look is more focused on spring style during the brisker months but could still be altered for the cold weather February brings.

Outfit Details- jacket: Kohls, shirt: H&M, pants: Kohls, watch: Kohls, bracelets: Alex and ani, necklace: Forever 21, lace up flats: Old Navy

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

Idea #5: With a dress- A denim jacket is an easy way to dress down a little black dress. I love this one paired with gold accents and heeled booties.

Essence Lipstick Review

Hi friends, happy February! I’m sending my apologies for having no post yesterday but it was the first day of my second semester and I was cheering for boys basketball throughout the evening. In case you didn’t know i’m a freshman in high school and a Varsity cheerleader which keeps me completely swamped for a good portion of the year. Fortunately right now is basketball season which means I’m down to about two games a week, last night being one of them. Besides the point, today I’m here to review my favorite lipsticks on the market which are from Essence.

IMG_7562The Essence Long Lasting Lipstick sells at Ulta for only $2.99 a pop, which makes my wallet smile. I find that these lipsticks are very pigmented, non-drying, affordable, and always on my lips. This specific lipstick comes in nine different shades, I own three and will be providing swatches, color names, and individual reviews on each one.

#03 “Dare To Wear” Although red lipstick is not my favorite and I tend to reach towards pinks and nudes, I find that the blue undertones in this lipstick make your teeth appear whiter. I also find this lipstick to be the most pigmented and the one that lasts the longest out of the six I own.

#06 “Barely There” This dark nude is my second favorite out of the bunch, it’s slightly brown but looks stunning on people with olive green undertones, I highly recommend this one if you’re looking for a lippie that matches all eye looks.

#07 “Natural Beauty” is a slight enhancement of one’s natural lip color. I find the light pink super flattering and compliments any and all skin tones. I’ve used this on multiple people and it never fails me.

#09 “Wear Berries” Around homecoming time in October I was planning on wearing a berry lip and a matching nail. When I looked at the color sticker I had intended it to be darker but considering I don’t even like dark lips that much I was pleased to see that this berry was slightly lighter than I expected.

#12 Blush My Lips I love a bright pink in the warmer months and considering this lipstick is hydrating I find it a must have and a win win situation. I hate the fact that lipsticks lacking blue undertones make your teeth appear yellower, this one is an exception.

#15 “Oh So Matt!” This is my absolute favorite out of the six I have, it’s one of the palest lipsticks I own and matches everything. Also, I find that it compliments my skin tone so nicely. Considering I almost always have on warm toned eye shadows I feel that a nude lip makes the look appear complete all around.

Thank you so much for all of the love and support. Please leave any requests if you have them and don’t forget to subscribe and follow me on Instagram @StyledByMcKenz. I hope you have a happy Tuesday and the rest of the week. With love, McKenz.
